AI-Powered Search Comes to India's Biggest Streaming Platform

OpenAI has partnered with Reliance to bring conversational AI search to JioHotstar, India's largest streaming service. Users will be able to search for movies, shows, and live sports using text and voice prompts in multiple languages.

What the Partnership Offers

  • AI Search: Natural language search for movies, shows, and live sports
  • Multi-language: Support for multiple Indian languages
  • Personalized Recommendations: AI-powered suggestions based on viewing history
  • ChatGPT Integration: Search JioHotstar directly from ChatGPT

OpenAI's India Push

India has over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. OpenAI plans to open offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, adding to their existing Delhi office.

The partnership was announced at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where Sam Altman appeared alongside industry leaders including Anthropic's Dario Amodei and Google's Sundar Pichai.

Two-Way Discovery

Beyond in-app search, users will be able to discover JioHotstar content directly through ChatGPT, creating a seamless two-way discovery layer.

Part of Larger Strategy

This is part of OpenAI's OpenAI for India initiative, which includes:

  • Tata Group partnership for AI data centers
  • Enterprise deployments with Indian companies
  • Education partnerships
  • Fintech partnerships (Pine Labs, MakeMyTrip)
